Friendly Nation Initiative welcomes increased funding to UNHCR

Tony Shepherd today congratulated the Government in its commitment to provide an additional AUD$8.5 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The funding will support the response to the Syrian refugee crisis.

Mr Shepherd who chairs the Friendly Nation Initiative said the increased funding would provide much needed support to families who are near breaking point.

“The conditions in Lebanon and Turkey are harrowing, families do not have the means to feed children or pay for medicines. Australia can and should do more.”

The Friendly Nation Initiative is a joint effort by the BCA, ACCI and AiGroup to identify opportunities for employment for newly arrived refugees. Iconic Australian businesses have become partners in the Friendly Nation Initiative to help secure meaningful employment for refugees fleeing the crisis.

As part of the Friendly Nation Initiative, a group of prominent Australian business leaders visited refugee camps in Turkey and Lebanon, and saw first hand the need for an increased international response to the crisis.

“Any further help the Australian Government can provide to alleviate the dire situation many of these refugees face is always welcomed,” said Mr Shepherd.
